Physics Friction Mix MCQ (Single Correct)

A block of mass m is on inclined plane of angle θ. The coefficient of friction between the block and the plane is µ and tan θ > µ. The block is held stationary by applying a force P parallel to the plane. The direction of force pointing up the plane is taken to be positive. As P is varied from P 1 = mg (sin θ – µcos θ) to P 2 = mg (sin θ + cos θ), the frictional force f versus P graph will look like:

A
B
C
D

The correct answer is:
A

P1 = mg sin θ – µmg cos θ

P2 = mg sin θ + µmg cos θ

Initially block has tendency to slide down and as tan θ > µ, maximum friction µmg cos θ will act in

positive direction. When magnitude P is increased from P 1 to P 2 , friction reverse its direction from

positive to negative and becomes maximum i.e. µmg cos θ in opposite direction.
